So we bought a new house — now to disassemble everything and prepare to move!

Disassembling the home office

First everything has to come down, to make the home office presentable on the sales photos and during the open house.

My man cave for the last six years was slowly turned into a regular room
Finally! The home office is ready for sales photos and the open house
My whisky collection is on the move!

Homelab changes

To make the move easier I am making several changes to my homelab and its services. Also — there is no fiber available in the new house, so I have to rethink what services to host at home… 😟

Looks like there is a chance that they will do another fiber run in my area! 😄

Services I can not do without are moved to a VPS:

  • Gitea
  • Logistics system
  • Paste service (xpb)

A few things have been turned off or disabled:

  • Unbound DNS server, using dnsmasq on the Edgerouter instead
  • CCTV server, all cameras have been taken down anyways

All LXC containers on Alpha have been moved to Epsilon, Alpha will be shut down for now and probably be used as my desktop computer or a dedicated media server in the future. I’m thinking Epsilon will be easier to get back up in the new house, since it has a small form factor. Also; the load is pretty light without the CCTV server.

Hypervisors

Alpha
Main hypervisor
Intel Core i7-7700K @ 4.2GHz, 48GB RAM
Epsilon
Backup hypervisor
Dell Optiplex 9010 SFF
Intel Core i5-3470 @ 3.2GHz, 16GB

The future home office

So what does my future home office look like? It’s a 3.1×3.2 meter room in the basement of the new house. With thick concrete walls, and no windows. Your typical basement storage room. But I am going to transform it 😄

Looking into the future home office, through the opening from the adjacent room
Yeah, the shelves have to go and I think some painting is required
Yes there is a water heater in here, thats just how it is

Home office moving day

Update June 4th: We are moving the home office and homelab today! 😄

All servers removed from the rack, ready for transport
I removed everything of weight from the rack, it’s pretty heavy by it self
Got the rack down the basement stairs, had to take of the wheels to fit it through the doorway
Server rack and shelves in the new home office
The electronics lab equipment was moved a few days later
So empty without the server rack…
Goodbye old home office
